Spectral Applied Research Laser Illumination
The LMM5 Laser Merge Module
The Spectral Applied Research LMM5 sets a new standard for laser merge modules. The LMM5 couples the light from 1 to 5 solid state lasers into a single fiber optic cable. The light from the fiber can be used to drive a number of devices but the LMM5 was designed with confocal and TIRF microscopy in mind. The LMM5 has the performance and control characteristics that make it ideally suited to the requirements of advanced live-cell imaging.
The LMM5 uses shutters for positive on/off control with rapid switching time. A continuously variable ND (neutral density) filter wheel allows for individual laser power control to optimize exposures. All controls are through a USB port although the shutters have a manual override on the control unit.
A flexible mounting system allows most diode and DPSS (diode pumped solid state) lasers to be easily mounted. Although 5 lasers can be mounted, the system can be sold with fewer lasers and the customer can add additional lasers at a later date. The most common laser wavelengths are 405nm, 440nm, 488nm, 491nm, 561nm, and 655nm.
The small footprint and novel fiber exit geometry allow the unit to be placed on or under the table while taking little valuable lab space. The robust design means that the unit can be moved, bumped or have things stacked on top of it without affecting the alignment.
Spectral has developed a module that can combine the outputs of 2?5 diode lasers into a single fiber optic cable for input into the instrument. This equipment is intended to use Class IIIb lasers so that the Laser Merge Module is classified as a Class IIIb laser product. The LMM5 is designed to meet the requirements of European standard IEC 60825-1:1993+A1:1997+A2:2001 and US standard 21 CFR 1040.10 and 1040.11 except for deviations pursuant to Laser Notice No. 50, dated July 26, 2001.
